1 APRIL 2016 #15 … CHILDREN OF THE SAME GOD

On Holy Thursday, Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of Muslim, Christian, and Hindu refugees, the gesture of service Jesus performed on his disciples before his crucifixion. Francis contrasted that gesture with the “gesture of destruction” carried out by the Brussels attackers, saying they wanted to destroy the brotherhood of humanity.

Speaking off the cuff in the windy courtyard of the refugee center, the Pope said, “”All of us, together: Muslims, Hindi, Catholics, Copts, Evangelicals. But brothers, children of the same God. We want to live in peace, integrated.” [Photo from a video by KMGH]

Let us all take the Pope’s message to heart, especially those of us who want to close borders to anyone who is not “just like us.”

Cecy and Grace — Amen, indeed. I count His Holiness as one of my colleagues on this life journey.

At the end of my book THE MESSAGE (p. 105) there is a visionary statement by my dear friend Kiran Verma, the poet lureate of Khajuraho, which includes these words: Rejoicing in a world where all people know you as the One God, though we still worship you in richly diverse forms.” I think we’ll always have a bunch of religions.
