EDUCATION IS NOT THE FILLING OF A PAIL,
BUT THE LIGHTING OF A FIRE. — William Butler Yeats
That is what teaching is all about.
I had the privilege of serving as Visiting Professor of the English Language at Arabaev Kyrgyz State University during my recent four years of service as U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer.
At Arabaev U., I was able to create courses on Shakespeare and on Russian Literature in English Translation. I also coached the Drama Club.
On a cold winter day, I accompanied some of my Drama Club students to a presentation of Shelkunchik (THE NUTCRACKER) at the Bishkek opera house. (None had ever attended a ballet before.)
My goal as a teacher was to inspire a love of the English language, of literature, and of the arts. In turn, my students were a great inspiration to me.
